"An activity involving physical exertion and skill that is governed by a set of rules or customs and often undertaken competitively." Nascar is a physically demanding sport, but obviously not in the same way as say football or basketball. Temperatures inside the car exceed 130 mph, and drivers of
ten lose ten pounds every race. This in itself is physically draining. There is also the applied G-Forces when they go through each corner.
And of course the rest of the definition is met with the sanctioning body, NASCAR, setting the rules and the competitive drive to win that all auto racers pocess.
