By the 80s, TV began to recognise the commercial appeal of the shirtless male. Dallas faced particular pressure from daytime soaps, and Dynasty, which began in 81 and had a much better-looking cast. So Dallas brought in male characters with shirtless appeal.
Here is the scene introducing Sue Ellen's toyboy, 'Pee-der', played by Chris Atkins. He had already established his sex object credentials in 'Blue Lagoon' (80). Here he returns to the water in the tightest most revealing speedos ever seen on TV up to that point.
